A breaker out works on harvesting sites, attaching cables to felled trees so they can be hauled up to the landing site. This is one of the most physically demanding jobs in forestry.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
This is generally an entry-level role, and no qualifications are needed. You'll be working towards a Level 3 qualification. It is a good place to learn all the basics of safe harvesting operations. A breaker out must be:
- physically fit and healthy
- hardworking
- prepared to work outdoors in all weathers and on all types of terrain
- extremely safety conscious.
This job usually needs early morning starts and sometimes long travel distances. Workers must also enjoy being part of a team.
CAREER PROGRESSION
With training, a breaker out can move into a number of other roles as part of a harvesting crew, including log making, quality control, and machine operation. There is potential to become a crew foreman and end up running your own crew.
