TOKOMAIRIRO – FORESTRY PATHWAY TRAINING
Entry-level training is available for Year 12 and 13 school students in Milton, South Otago. This training aims to give students a broad introduction to all the careers available in forestry.
The training is provided by Tokomairiro Training, in partnership with Johnson Forestry Services, Mosgiel. Students will attend for 2 days per week for 32 weeks (two semesters). Ratio of practical and theory training is approx 50/50 and students work to achieve forestry NZQA unit standards at Levels 2 and 3, which double as NCEA credits.

COURSE CONTENT
This Forest Pathway course teaches:
- Forest establishment and Silviculture including site preparation, planting, release spraying and pruning.
- Basic chainsaw skills
- Health and safety, forest entry requirements and hydration and nutrition for performance.
Assistance with literacy and numeracy will be provided.
The practical part of the course includes visits to forestry operations, sawmills and port facilities. Students will get involved in planting and pruning with a silviculture crew.
COURSE COSTS
There are no costs for this course. Students will be issued with PPE for the course and will take this with them.
